Two Exciting September Events at Cypress Lawn

Cypress Lawn is an important part of Bay Area history. As stewards of this historical treasure, we feel a deep responsibility to partner with others in our community who feel the same commitment to education and learning. This is why, through the Cypress Lawn Heritage Foundation, we host and sponsor a number of free lectures, walking tours, our book club, and other events that promote historical knowledge. We have two events this month that we’re particularly excited about, and we hope you will join us as we continue to protect and preserve not only Cypress Lawn and our vast, beautiful cemetery grounds, our matchless arboretum, and historical buildings, but also the history of the great Bay Area.

Cypress Lawn’s Annual Free Photography Seminar

One of the most accurate ways to capture and preserve moments for future generations is through photography. The science of this art form has changed drastically since Cypress Lawn first began over a century ago. We’ve progressed from tintypes and daguerreotypes, to magically appearing Polaroids, and now, our Smartphones are constantly at hand to potentially capture every moment in our lives – from the mundane to the momentous. But regardless of the changing technology, the art form remains much the same.

If you want to move beyond the basic “selfie” and learn how to take unique and striking photographs, join us on Sunday, September 17th at 2:00 PM, for a FREE photography seminar renowned cemetery photographer, Douglas Keister. Called “America’s most noted photographer of historic architecture,” he will explore with you the acres of art, architecture, and horticulture at Cypress Lawn. Before our twilight photo shoot, we’ll meet in the Cypress Lawn Reception Room on our second floor, where Douglas will present the slideshow, “Tombs to Check Out Before You Do.” At 4:00 PM, he will give all a brief presentation of photographic techniques before embarking on our twilight trek through the Cypress Lawn grounds.

You might also take this as an opportunity to take photos to submit to our annual Cypress Lawn Calendar Contest!

Nighttime Walking Tour

Is there anything more enchanting than a beautiful, historic cemetery at night? Our nighttime walking tours are always so popular – and we hope you will join us for our next one on September 23rd at 7:00 PM. We’ll come together at the Noble Chapel and Terry Hamburg will lead us through some of the most beautiful areas of Cypress Lawn at night. There is no cost to attend and there will be refreshments.
