Cremation at Cypress Lawn
Cypress Lawn offers a variety of facilities to memorialize your loved ones who choose to be cremated. Cypress Lawn holds the distinction of being the first cemetery in the United States to build a crematory on cemetery grounds in 1893. In the same year, it also built its first columbarium to house the niches to place the cremated remains. Other niche areas have been built within Cypress Lawn to accommodate the growing number of people who are opting for cremation.
Cypress Lawn features cremated remains interment locations that would accommodate the whole family. There are several locations in our Hillside Gardens for those families who would like to stay together. These locations include the Hillside Fountain, Lakefront, Overlooks, Tree Memorials, and some family niches located in the different public mausoleums at Cypress Lawn.
Niches – are spaces built in walls, inside or outside a columbarium where urns are placed. Niches may have glass, marble, granite, or bronze fronts. Urns are containers for cremated remains. The act of placing created remains in a niche is called inurnment. Cremated remains may also be placed in the ground and Cypress Lawn offers a variety of in-ground cremated remains burial areas.
