In general, a surviving spouse is eligible for a lump-sum death benefit of $255, and other dependent family members may be eligible for certain benefits. Veteran's Benefits: Honorably discharged Veterans are eligible for certain benefits, including a flag to drape the casket, and military funeral honors. Your counselor will ask if you would like military honors, and will be pleased to make all necessary arrangements. We will need a copy of the military discharge record form DD214. Further benefits, such as partial reimbursement for some funeral expenses, are available in certain situations, such as when death is due to a service-related injury or in a Veteran's hospital or other VA facility. A benefits coordinator from the Department of Veterans Affairs can give you complete, accurate information.
